Strategy Rule and new ways for improving rules2008-07-21 20:21:10
Since 2005, an upsurge of rules reform,I focused all my attention to rules reform. I did some survey and research, I think there are some problems in current RIF rule. Besides the problem of less variety, another problem is more significant: the benefit players obtained from the research of 26 opening is far more than their spent in researching. Nowadays, it is not difficult to research those openings by the aid of software, and those players who use these results in games can get big advantages easily during the game, even win the game directly. Consequently, more and more players are stimulated to research openings, even someone think it is a must to learn research. I don’t against research work, proper research could help the development of Renju game, but excessive research only brings damages.

I try to find a way to solve this problem. I ever tried some new rules for several times, but most of results were not satisfied as I expected. Afterward, I start to try Strategy Rule, a new way to improving rules. Let me explain one of Strategy Rule on below:
   Strategy Rule-WD:
       - The first player puts one of 26 openings
       - The next player has a right to swap
       - From 4 to 7moves, both players have rights to decide if to play normally, or to use SA right: one puts 2 moves, the other can swap
   For example:
alt="Your browser does not have Java installed. Please go to www.java.com and press Download Free Java."
D11 opening, A plays white.
     Now A can play 4th moves, or use SA right: put 4th and 5th moves, and then B has a right to swap.
      1. Now we suppose A played 4th and 5th moves, B can select white or black.
         If B selects white, B can play 6th move, or play 6th and 7th moves, then A selects one color;
         Vice versa, if B select black, then A can play 6th move, or play 6th and 7th moves, then B selects.
alt="Your browser does not have Java installed. Please go to www.java.com and press Download Free Java."
If B plays 6th move, then A can play 7th move, or play 7th and 8th moves, then B can select color;
         It will be same when A plays 6th move.
alt="Your browser does not have Java installed. Please go to www.java.com and press Download Free Java."
If B plays 6th and 7th moves, A can select color. The 8th move is just out of the rang of 4th~7th moves. Since 8th move, both sides continue the game as usual.
   It will be same when A plays 6th and 7th moves.

                              2. If A play 4th move, then B can play 5th moves, or use SA right. This is similar as above.
It sounds a bit difficult to understand, but you will find it is pretty easy after you play it.

What I would like to emphasized in Strategy Rule is: the player in game to decide whether to use the right or not. This also is an essential of new ways for improving rules. For example, for avoiding my opponent using any research, or my situation is weak, I decide to use SA right; or if I am not worried about my opponent using any research, or the situation of both of us is balance, I won’t use SA right. Not only this rule can increase variety effectively, but also, more important is it can weaken the advantage of research. Of course, it won’t eliminate the advantage of research. I am not going to explain the details through complex analysis, I believe amounts of practice will be more convincible.
As I mentioned at the beginning, the problem would cause excessive research. If only add variety, the problem cannot be solved; only the researching time is extended. I hope we can find a way to solve this problem, and can encourage players to exercise their patience, calculations and some other capabilities, not only the remembrances.

PS: When I discuss Strategy Rule and new ways for improving rules with some friends, we found that not only the Strategy Rule-WD I mentioned on above can solve this problem, but also there are some other methods. We can create many branches from Strategy Rule. We are designing “Zhejiang On-line new game platform” for new rules, it will be finished on June. I hope the rule can be researched thoroughly on that platform, and I hope everybody can join us at that time. Below are a list of branches of Strategy Rule, and I think first two rules are concise:
Strategy Rule-WD: I created this rule with Wu Di together. This rule has been introduced on above.
Strategy Rule-WJ: from 1st to 7th moves, besides normal moves, both sides can use SA right: one side play 2 successive moves. But after one side using SA right, and then another side can select black or white. 1st move must be on H8, 2nd move must be on the scope of 3*3 around H8, 3rd move must be on the scope of 5*5 around H8.
Strategy Rule-LX: similar with Strategy Rule-WD, only the 4th~7th moves is changed to 4th~8th moves.
Strategy Rule-RA:first player choose one of 52 openings, second player choose black or white. From 4t to 7th moves, besides normal moves, both sides can use JO right: A puts nth moves (4≤n ≤7), and declares 1,2 or 3 (n+1)th moves will be offered in the game; and then B has a right to swap. If not to swap, B puts as many (n+1)th moves as it declared before, then A chooses one of (n+1)th moves and plays next move; if to swap, A will puts as many (n+1)th moves as it declared before, B chooses one of (n+1)th moves and plays next move.
Besides these branches, some other factors, such as usage scope of rights, type of rights, limitation of right, also can help to make balance between “benefit from research” and “spent in research”.
