Aldis Reims started to play renju in 1984, having read an article about renju in Latvian magazine. He has been Latvian Champion 12 times (during 1986-1997), USSR Champion in 1986, winner of Swedish Open in 1990, two times 3rd place in World Championship (1991, 1993), the 2nd place in Tokyo Open in 1991 (Nakamura was 1st there), the 3rd place in Team World Championship as a member of Latvian team in 1996, World e-mail Champion in 1996 and 2000 and 2nd place in 1998.
