Some people think that being able to calculate many moves ahead requires a special talent. Actually, if you learn several techniques of counting moves then you will be able to count very far even without having any special training or talent.
The most common technique that I use for counting moves is "forgetting irrelevant stones".
For example, when you count a VCT attack that is maybe over 10 moves long, then you can see approximate idea, but you are not able to visualize the ending clearly, you can hardly see the exact position of all your stones, and seeing opponents stones too seems nearly impossible task. However, you can do it like this:
First step of calculation should be very general, just try to evaluate the material, and see the probable attacking sequence, based on your experience and intuition.
During the general calculation you cannot visualize the endings clearly. That's all right. Now you already know where is the ending of the attack. That is the key of the attack. Now go through same path once again, but this time, do not focus on irrelevant stones, try to ignore them, and remember only the stones that may have some influence to the area of ending attack. In case of long attacks, you may have to do this visualizing many times.
Finally, you will have a vision of only the final attack area in your eyes. You were able to forget all the irrelevant stones that you used to begin the attack, and you only see the 5-6 stones that are beside the final attack area. So, you have less things to remember, and you can use your memory to calculate the exact VCT of the final attack.
I can use this technique to calculate very far ahead in games.
Just remember, you may have to do the visualization many times, and each time try to focus on the ending stones, until they will become very clear in your vision.
If you feel tired and cannot concentrate then the visualization of the final attack area may not succeed.
