------------------------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Jun 1998 15:58:23 +0000 Renju Newsletter No 51 - 1998 ------------------------------------------------ Some pages with Pente games are now available on Internet Many players around the world are asking me for pente writings and as I can understand at least the writings and newsletters by the former U.S.Pente association are very difficult to find. As the U.S. Pente association ceased for more than 10 years and as it is a pity for enthusiast that it is so difficult to find the former writings I have made some gifs (sometimes jpegs) of some of the most interesting writings by the former U.S Pente association. You can find links to these pages from http://www.renju.nu/pente/pentgifs.htm --------------------------------------------------------------------- Nickolai Alexandrov's new address I have moved. My new address is: Nickolai Alexandrov Ceres Inc. 3007 Malibu Canyon Rd Malibu CA 90262 email: nicka@ceres-inc.com tel: 310-825-5315 fax: 310-825-5275 ------------------------------ Letters to Nishizono Norio, Japan e-mail HBG01461@niftyserve.or.jp cannot be delivered. Does anyone know his new e-mail address? ----------------------------------------------------------- Some years ago RIF had 4 webbstartpages but it became too difficult to update all internal links with 4 startpages. Therefore now there is only one startpage with all links. Almost all new information you will find on the RIF newspage. Older information you will find on some of the old newspages. RIF´s site is pretty big. It has when I write this info 27 folders and 1264 files. Most of it you can find directly from the startpage. You are also able to see how the RIF page looked some years ago i.e. on March 23, 1995. Most of the links from this date does not work any longer. Here is the answer from Alexander Nosovsky. Dear Carlo Thank you for your information. It seems that you are not using the program correct. First you have to choose parameters Try PARAM_MINUTE button. You can make Black & White 2 minutes each (for fast only) and then you have to choose parameter BAYOMI MOVE 1 and TIME 1 if you want to use 1 move for 1 minute bayomi. Sometimes in Renju there is used buyomi 10 moves for 10 minutes. So , please check parameters which you had used. Then you have to push Run button and then you have to push button (but not points Black and White) First I had mistakes the same. I think the "canadian" and "simple" biyomi is possible but it is not possible professional biyomi. Try again and don't hestitate to ask me againe. I had a try on the byo-yomi clock and have a few comments: - a "pause" button is missing (and a "reset" button too) - the byo-yomi time should be in seconds (in my opinion) - the byo-yomi counting is "strange". It seems that is a time addition, i.e. once you have finished the main time you enter byo-yomi which is not reset after every move, but is progressively erased. Once the byo-yomi is finished the clock becomes red and starts counting upwards. In Go we have several types of byo-yomi, but none matchs the one of Filippov clock: - professional byo-yomi is: you have a fixed time (in general 10 minutes) divided in slots (in general 1 minute per slot). If you move in less than one slot, the byo-yomi is reset after the move. If you take more than one slot to move, you loose the slots completed and, when the move is done, the clock is reset to the remaining slots. An example: When entering byo-yomi you have 10 minutes i.e. 10 slots of 1 minute each. If you move in 1 to 59 seconds, you still will have 10 slots i.e 10 minutes. If you move in 1'00 to 1'59" you then will have only 9 slots i.e. 9 minutes. And so forth. If you finish the slots you loose - simple byo-yomi: you have 1 minute (or 30 or 20 or 15 seconds) and you have to move in that time. If you take more you loose - "canadian byo-yomi": you have a fixed amount of time (in general 5 to 15 minutes) to make a number of moves (in general 10 to 25). After you have done the fixed number of moves, the clock is reset to the byo-yomi. If yo play less moves in the byo-yomi you loose There are other types of byo-yomi counting, but the mentioned three are the most used ones. Mine were meant as constructive suggestions and not at all as criticism. I appreciated a lot Filippov idea and program. Carlo Tibald ------------------------- 3. Today, however, we have seeral such good places. The three most wellknown places probably are: 1. Richard's Play-By-eMail Server where you can play a lot of brain games including gomoku, renju and pente and where we are playing our World Championship. The URL-adress is: http://eiss.erols.com/~pbmserv/ 2. 5WIN - This site where you can play free gomoku and renju is very popular for the moment. The URL-address is: http://www.5win.com/ 3.Game Club - Here you can also buy a CD with a good playing program. The URL-address is: http://www.game-club.com/ We have two pages with many links: 1.Alexander Nosovsky has made an investigation and he found a lot of places. The URL- address to his investigation: http://www.renju.nu/renlinks.htm 2. The California Renju Club has made links to some good places. The URL-address is: http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/Rapids/7862/links.html Please, let me know if you have or know a good place and if it is not mentioned in any of these link-places. Now I have been informed about a new Japanese place for playing. Meteor issues - magazine of Sankt-Peterburg Renju Club Analitik-2 -the theory russian magazine Moscow Pages - by Moscow Club Those who can read russian enjoy it ! Other can see diagrams and understand some comentaries. Regards Nosovsky ---------------------------------- Tommy, There is a great web page for renju players: http://www.latinocybermall.com/ We have a link to it on our California Renju Club http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/Rapids/7862/ Nick Alexandrov -------------------------------- Date: Mon, 9 Mar 1998 23:40:08 +0000 Renju Newsletter No 22 - 1998 --------------------------- In Renju Newsletter No 21 I informed about WC via e-mail. Then I forgot some little information: 21 days rule is not a rule of RIF. This rule we have because Richard W. Rognlie use this rule on his server and we are playing on this server. If you are playing in the WC via e-mail and if you want vacation i.e. if you want to have a longer rest than 20 days you have to apply being in the vacation mode by sending a letter to Richard W Rognlie. At the same time you must inform all the other players in your group and your referee. The ordinary referees Nosovsky for A-tournament and Meritee for B-tournaments shall not normally handle questions regarding vacations. If a player has not applied for vacation and if more than 21days are gone without any move has been made there is a risk that Richard Rognlie will stop the game and the player without the vacation will win the game. As you know all players in WC must subscribe on Renju Newsletter because it should be easy for me to inform them in a Renju Newsletter. One of the players in WC via e-mail: Terekhov, Dmitri with e-mail terekhov@YorkU.CA is playing but when I try to send Renju Newsletters to him I receive a message that the adress is not valid. If you play with him or can reach him via server, please, ask him at once to send me his new address. ------------------------------- Date: Sun, 8 Mar 1998 01:32:47 +0000 Renju Newsletter No 21 - 1998 The Members of RIF Correspondence Comission have voted about the rule that in Renju WC via e-mail a player has to make a move within 21 days. The voting was if we wanted this rule to be valid or not and the majority of the commission wanted it to still be there and that a player could ask for vacation when he needs it just as the rule has been before. As a matter of fact this rule is not a renju rule and RIF cannot change it. The rule is used for all players on the server we are using and we are offered to play our World Championship free of charge on Richard W. Rognlie´s server. If we want to go on playing there we have to follow this rule. Otherwise we have to put up our own server which will be very expensive or we have to find some other server as good as Richard´s and I doubt we will find one that works so well without any cost for RIF. The usual way is that the player himself takes contact with Richard W. Rognlie and asks to be put them in vacation mode. And when the player return, Richard will take him out of vacation mode, and the nags will resume. Your time to think will be reduced as usual even if you have vacation. The only change when you have vacation is that you will not lose the game because you have not made any move for 21 days. However if you ask for vacation and only have for example 20 days left to think it is useless because you will anyway lose after 20 days. All players that for some time will get problems because of sickness or travelling or holiday can ask to be put in vacation mode. The role of 21 days is there because sometimes a player stops to play without announcing it and this might happen also in Renju WC tournaments. (This also has happened and especially as a matter of fact it was more rule than exception that it happened when we played our WC with usual snail mail.) If a player stops to play it is good if the games could be counted as ended as soon as possible. As this is not a RIF rule RIF cannot either make any additional rules to this simple rule stated by Richard W Rognlie regarding vacation. For example RIF cannot state a maximum time for vacation for example as was discussed 40 days for each player /or 20+20 days. All such extra rule can make very complicated situations for the adminstrator of the server. At all events proposals for such new rules must wait till next tournament. As a matter of fact long ago RIF has already asked for too many special rules and exceptions for playing on the server. Summary: Nothing has been changed and if a player wants vacation he could contact Richard W Rognlie. Any nice questions about this should be sent to me because Oleg Fedorkin is away for one month in Germany and he will probably not be able to answer you letter. All aggressive letters will be put in -------------------------

As new International renju raiting-list is not available for a long time /from April of last year/, we used other method for lot. We thought not only about strength of participants but also tried to separate participants from the same contries to different groups. For example, we gave the possibility for all participants from other contries to play with strong Japanese player. Also it`s a good chance for 4 Japenese players to fight for 4 place in next final A. Group 1. A.Kashihara /JAP/ - kashihara, O.Klimachev /RUS/ - klimachev, A.Kobzev /ARM/ - kai, A.Lipsits /USA/ - alipsits, Y.Madissoon /EST/ - ymadis, I.Sinyov /RUS/ - sinyovi, D.Terekhov /CAN/ - dterekhov Group 2. E.Bobkov /RUS/ - bobkove, R.Idelsons /LAT/ - robert12, N.Kawamura /JAP/ - norihiko, V.Kolesnik /UKR/ - kvik, L.Laibinis /LIT-FIN/ - llaibini, A.Nosovsky /RUS/ - nosovs, C.Tibaldi /ITA/ -tibia Group 3. S.Filippov /RUS/ - filippov, V.Lunkin /RUS/ - lunkin, M.Mammel /USA/ - mmammel, K.Ooi /JAP/ - kooi, S.Smirnov /RUS/ - smirnov, T.Taimla /EST/ - tunnu, I.Virag /HUN/ - virag Group 4. B.Asplund /SWE/ - basplund, S.Bondarenko /RUS/ - troter, L.Gluhovsky /ISR/ - leonid, Z.Zhliup /CHI/ - zz, I.Rinkis /LAT/ - ingus, A.Soosorv /EST/ - asoosorv, T.Takagawa /JAP/ - takagawa, S.Tatarintsev /RUS/ - sergey Group 2 seems to be the strongest and most interesting. Group 3 seems to be also very difficult and too funny group because 3 of 7 participants are from Moscow club. After withdraw of Alexey Skuridin we needed to find referee of our tournaments. It was not easy, but now Ando Meritee /EST/ - ameritee, kullo@neti.ee and Alexander Nosovsky /RUS/ - nosovs, stigma.ltd@g23.relcom.ru kindly agreed to be the referees. So A.Nosovsky will be the referee of final A, A.Meritee will be the referee of finals B. The referees will check time-move control and will help participants with the special rule /see it below/ to prevent move copy and will decide all tournament problems with help of Richard Rognlie, master of playserver. !If there would be any serious problem in our tournaments, we should discuss it on RIF Correspondence Commission and gotta make decision as soon as possible. We should remind for all participants next things: 1.Only winners of these 4 groups will have right to play next final A. 2.Normal time-move control is 135 days for each players till 120th move. !But for games between Russian players in semi-final groups time control is 115 days for each players. For final A, this short time control will use in the games between O.Fedorkin, V.Golosov, R.Kolpakov, Yu.Tarannikov /all players from Russia/ and also in the games between J.Gaulitz and S.Karlsson /both from Sweden/. !!Notice that playserver`s and common numbering of moves are different. 3.RIF Correspondence Commission decided to use the special rule these tournaments to prevent the moves copy. See below the complete text of this rule: RULE If the next conditions are hold (i) there are the same positions in the games A - B and C - D (where C and/or D would be the same players, for example D = A, C = B, or they would be another players); (ii) it's turn of players A and C; (iii) player C didn't move during 1 week; (iv) at least 15 move was made (in the case D = A, C = B this condition is down) then player A has the right to demand (through the referee) from player C to move in the game C - D during next 1 week. But when player C has moved then player A MUST make ANOTHER move in the game A - B. END OF RULE Of course, these players A and C are the players from the same group. Linköping was rewarded for best team performance relative their ratings. In the 2nd round from the end Jönköping finally showed what they can, beating Uppsala by 3-0. Also Jönköping were the favourites to the championship, remember they were both number 1 and 2 1996. However this time they really had to fight for the victory. Skuridin The festival of intellectual games was held in Nizhny Novgorod 18-21 Dec. It was combination of renju, go and bridge competitions. Renju, go and bridge players in N.N. have a lot of contacts and help each other to solve same problems. The main idea of the festival was to give a chance for players to take part in all competitions. The winner was determined in each tournament and in the whole festival. The main renju tournament. Swiss system. 7 rounds. 22 participants. Top 5 are: 1. Alexey Skuridin 7 dan 7 points 2. Sergey Shevelev 3 dan 6 3. Olga Skuridina 1 dan 5 4. Yury Provorov 6 kju 5 5. Vladislav Kareev 5 dan 5. There was an additional renju tournament for beginners, go and bridge fans. In go tournament for beginners I`ve got 4 (from 5) points and took 4 place. It was my first participation in go conpetitoin. In bridge (the main tournament) I`ve got 5 place. Artur Gorshenkov was my partner. It was not seccessful result (we have won bridge competitions in N.N. many times), but it was sufficient to get first place in the whole festival. Another renju player Sergey Shevelev (he is schoolboy, 13 years old) have got 6 place. It was the first festival of intellectual games. But the N.N.renju federation, the N.N. go federation and N.N. bridge club hope the such festival will become traditional. Friendly yours, A.Skuridin ----------------------------------------------------
