Konstantin Nikonov won Moscow Cup!
Preliminary rounds, 1/8 and 1/4 --- see Renju Newsletter No 86 - 1996
1/2 Alexander Milevsky - Sergey Filippov 2 - 0 Konstantin Nikonov - Yuriy Tarannikov 1.5 - 0.5 Final for 1st place Konstantin Nikonov - Alexander Milevsky 2 - 2 Final for 3rd place Yuriy Tarannikov - Sergey Filippov 3 - 1
The final match for 1st place was very interesting.
1st game
Nikonov was a tentative black and seleceted D3. Milevsky chose white and won by means of foul double-four in a line at the edge of board on 78th move.
2nd game
Milevsky was a tentative black and seleceted I11. Ninonov chose black and made old 7th move. Game was a tie on 51th move.
3rd game
Nikonov was a tentative black and seleceted D5. Milevsky chose black and made classic 5th move (similar development with I6). Nikonov made sharp 12th move and won on 24th move.
4th game
Milevsky was a tentative black and seleceted I11. Ninonov chose black. A classic 30-moves variant was played. Game was a tie on 50th move.
By tournament system the fast games must been played. But opponents decided that winner would be determined by means of drawing. The main Cup Referee, Russian Qualificator Sergey Smirnov agreed with such decision and organized computer drawing. Konstantin Nikonov was a more lucky man.
With best wishes
Yuriy Tarannikov

All time list of Swedish Championships is updated
Now you can find the updated all time list of Swedish
Championships played with renju rules on the page:
http://www.renju.nu/masvre95.htm
On the page: http://www.lemes.se/kfumjkpg/maraton/maratonsm.htm
you can find a lot of other all time lists of Swedish
Championships. However all lists are not yet updated.
To the left Björn Wallgren and to the right Tord Andersson. |
I congratulate Tord Andersson for his first victory in Swedish
Championship. From the all time list you can see that he has
played in the group of best 10 players since 1984. No other
player have joined this group so long. However Tord participated
earlier in GoMoku Championships and his first good result was No
4 in GoMoku Championship 1981.
Tord used to play good in international tournaments but this is
his first big success among only Swedes.

Latvian WCh Qualification 1st part finished last weekend and 2nd part started.
In remaining 3 games all results (Gaujens-Andersons 1:0, Gurtskis-Balanova 0:1 and Matyuk-Demidov 0:1) were sensational and finally we got also quite strange quarterfinal pairs...

2nd PART. Balanova beated Demidov without any problems showing that Demidov's place in quarterfinal was just an accident. Gurtskis also won, however in both games Gaujens had an advantage.
In semifinal pairs Veidemanis lost 1st game to Balanova (!) and Reims played draw with gurtskis and somebody started discuss about possible final Gurtskis-Balanova !!! But Veidemanis quite quickly proved that Balanova's class is far away from his and only problem for Arnis is just a lack of concentration.
Victory for Reims wasn't so easy, but finally we got standard Latvian battle Veidemanis-Reims for title and WCh place.

The Nizhny Novgorod Renju Club has
celebrated the 13th anniversary
The Nizhny Novgorod Open tournament (march 14-16) was devoted to
this date.
33 partcipantstook part. The top 5:
1. Krasnonosov Dmitry 8 dan Moscow 8.5 points
2. Kareev Vladislav 3 dan N.Novgorod 8.5
3. Skuridin Alexey 7 dan N.Novgorod 8.5
4. Petrovsky Dmitry 3 dan N.Novgorod 7
5. Oljunin Sergey 5 dan N.Novgorod 6
This tournament was held in McMagon system. This system is used
often in go
tournaments. The McMagon is kind of Swiss system. All partcipants
are
divided into two, three or more groups (it depends upon total
number of
participants, number of rounds and variety of players category).
The
weakest group get no points before competition. More strong group
get one,
two and so on points before tournament. The reason of this
operation is to
exclude games between expert and beginners players. So I'd like
to
recommend the McMagon system to be used in tournaments with great
variety
of players category.
Friendly yours,
A. Skuridin.

A computer program to play Renju
Mark Mammel
mmammel@compuserve.com
has written a computer program to play Renju. It includes all
tournament rules and uses an opening book. The program's answers
are:
g3, i6, h12, g5. If you would like to try the program, it is
available for DOS at:

Renju in Taiwan
There is a big boom in Internet of late years. The members of
Renju players is growing on Internet too. There is a web site
called "Wu-lin"(Five world, It sounds like the fantasy
world
of Chinese Kung-fu in Chinese). We can play Five-in-a-row and
Renju on-line on the web site. It's free and over 33,000 hits
from Feb. this year. As I know the register profiles is over
2,700. But the actual members maybe 600-700 and Renju players
is about 20-30%. The "Wu-lin" is only Chinese(Big-5
code) now
and will offer a English version in future. The URL of it is
http://5.ficnet.net.tw
Welcome for your visit. We are also discussing Renju Problems
and Opening on the local Newsgroup: tw.bbs.rec.chess
The other players who can not use WWW can get the information
of Renju from BBS too.
In the other hand, There is a Renju get-together per month in
Taipei from this year. It was 4th time get-together yesterday.
There was about 8 members each time. We introduced the rules
to new Renju players more clearly and made a free competition
also discussed the Opening during the meeting time.
We are still beginners now. I think we need more experience.
I hope there can be some very strong players after 5-10 years.
Chung, Hsien-chi reporting from Taiwan, 24th Mar. 1997

Renju Sekai is since 30 years the flagship of renju. Every month a new issue is published. The main problem is that the magazine is written in Japanese which makes it difficult for non-japanese players to read the magazine. Recently No 500 of the magazine was published and page 13-60 as I can understand covers special celebration information. I congratulate Renju Sekai.
The printing "From the opening to the middle of the game" by Sagara was first presented as articles in Renju Sekai. The articles were very important because they showed players the best opening and middle play variants in practical playing.
For example the Swedish player became much better after the translation into Swedish were finished.
The articles were first translated from Japanese into Russian and then from Russian into Swedish and after that from Swedish into English. The translations took a lot of years before we had the English version.
Now a new book "Click of the Stones" is published by Alexander Nosovsky and Mikhail Koshin. The book is written in Russian language so now we only wait for someone to translate it into English. The book includes 190 pages and a lot of diagrams.
This is Alexander Nosovsky´s own words about the book.
"It is modern improved theoretick book. It is usefull for middle class players but for the strongest player it 'll be interesting to read it too. I hope that young players will learn from it and that they will use it in real games so the strongest players have to improve theory further."
Alexander Nosovsky has e-mail: stigma.ltd@g23.relcom.ru
yesterday was finished. Played 33 men, 9 rounds. The first 3 places have divided:

The time for thinking in the final of Renju WC via airmail will be long compared with the qualification tournament. I plan for 150 days for each player and game.
I also invite all renjuplayers to apply for participation in B-tournaments which will be played at the same time as the A-tournament. The best players in the B-tournaments will qualify for the A-tournament 1988.
There will be no qualfication tournament this autumn. The qualification tournaments will start around the 1st of February at the same time as the A-final. If there will be may players in B-finals only one game will be played in each match. More information will be published later.
The results from the qualification tournament soon finished will be one base for seeding in the B-tournaments.
I must receive your application for participation in the B-tournaments before the 24th of January.

Current standings in WC via e-mail will be found on the WC-page.
