The dates of the WC in S:t Petersburg and the Youth EC in Estonia

At the beginning of November in Elektrostal
Mr.Nosovsky (RIF vice-president)
Mr.Soosorv (ERL president)
Mr.Alexandrov (Sankt-Petersburg renju federation president)
Mr.Konstantin Nikonov (ARR president)
had a discussion about best dates of World Championship (WC) and Open
Youth European Championship (OYEC):

World Championship (WC):
QT - from 29.07 till 30.07;
Opening Ceremony - 31.07;
AT - 01-06.08;
BT (Open Tournament) - 01-05.08;
Women Championship - from 01.08;
Five- in-Row Tournament - 06.08;
Closing Ceremony - 06.08;
07.08 - free time, departure day.

Youth European Championship (OYEC):
Opening Ceremony - 08.08 (evening);
Tournaments (A,B,C) - 09-12.08;
Closing Ceremony - 12.08.

They tried to take into account known national wishes: OYEC will be
after WC (for Estonia); OYEC will be finished before 15th August
(for Sweden); WC will be in August (for Japan).

I know suggest the RIF Central Committee to decide about these exact dates
according to the meeting mentioned above. Anyone who has objections
must send them to me before the 20th of December.

If you here nothing more from me about these dates
from December 21 they are official dates.

RIF has also a page with all final games with comments by Norihiko Kawamua and with photos of both players.

New Meijin in Japan

Kazuto Hasegawa

In the 5th game of Meijinsen Final Mr. Hasegawa beated Mr. Kawamura and became a new Meijin.

5th game Black Hasegawa 1-0 White (T.B) Kawamura D8 at 29th move Total 3-2 Hasegawa got a title

Kawamura comments:
As I was a tentative black, I seleceted D8 again. Mr. Hasegawa chose another 5th move and went a typical 17th move. I think I could protect black's attack, but his 21th move was beyond my idea. Unfortunately I made a big mistake at 22th move. He found an easy win from 23.

Results from Baltic High League

Ando Meritee         EST	XXX 0.5  1   1   1   1   1   1	6.5p
Ants Soosorv         EST	0.5 XXX 0.5  0   1   1   1   1 	5p (12.75)
Arnis Veidemanis     LAT	 0  0.5 XXX 0.5  1   1   1   1	5p (11.75)
Aldis Reims          LAT	 0   1  0.5 XXX  1   0   1   1	4.5p
Aleksei Demidov      LAT	 0   0   0   0  XXX 0.5  1   1 	2.5p
Gatis Gurckis        LAT 	 0   0   0   1  0.5 XXX  0  0.5	2p (6.0)
Margus Tuvikene      EST	 0   0   0   0   0   1  XXX  1	2p (2.5)
Artis Gaujens        LAT	 0   0   0   0   0  0.5  0  XXX	0.5p

It was very equal fight till the end of the tournament. In last game against Gurckis Reims lost his chance to enter to Baltic Meijin match. Better quality points helped Soosorv to became valuable 2nd place in this tournament. After good play in Baltic Qualification tournament we expected good results from Margus Tuvikene but this time he played very bad. He did not concentrate enough, played "wrong" positions.

The final match with 4 games will be played in next year. Score 2:2 will give a victory to Meritee, as he is a winner of Baltic High League now.

The 4th game of Japanese Meijinsen Final was draw. Both players have 2 points so far. The final game will be held at 30th of November

4th game: Hasegawa black VS Kawamura white in D11 - Draw at 76th move

As Mr. Hasegawa chose D11, I selected white again. He changed 13th move, which was the point of upper 2nd move. As I missed white attacking at the middle of the game, black kept a little advantage. But black could not win and it lead to a draw.

1st Russian League and info about start of 5thWorld Championship

It is also previously decided to start WC-5 qualification Tournament to WC 28.7.97.

Complementary addition to the rules of Renju WC via e-mail

The time for thinking for the players in the qualification round of the Renju WC via e-mail just now going on is not very long. So far there are now no rules that could stop a player to try to win just because his opponent has not always access to Internet.For example if the game in practice is draw one player could just go on playing till all 225 intersections are filled with moves in the hope that his opponent should lose because of lack of time (because that the opponent has not always access to Internet).

Therefore I have decided for Renju WC via e-mail that after totally 150 moves (75 for black and 75 for white) a game is always draw. No exceptions from this rule is possible.

Tommy Maltell

Report from Renju WC via e-mail

It is very easy for anyone to ask for current standings in the Renju WC via e-mail. Just send a letter to
pbmserv@eiss.erols.com
and on the subject line write
renju standings

Then usually in a minute you will receive an electronic reply with the standings which also include the rating list for players on the pbm-server.

Here are the latest standings which I recently asked for

(On the URL-address: http://www.renju.nu/wcemail.htm you can find the real names for the players. Below names are only userids used for playing on the server. In a Renju Newsletter earlier this year I also informed about real names and userids.)

Report from Japanese Meijinsen Final by Meijin Norihiko Kawamura

2nd game --- Hasegawa won at 88th move D3 I was a tentative black and selected D3. He chose white and 5th was beside of 1st move. (under 4th move) He made three at 6th move. It means that variation was Mr. Sagara's favorite. (He played it in the Meijinsen tournament this year) I attacked very dangerously but he defenced correctly. At last I gave up attack but could not protect white's victory.

3rd game --- Kawamura won at 60th move D8 I selected D8 as I was tentative black again. D8 was very successful last year, you know. This time, Hasegawa played old style at 9th move and changed 25th move. I spent a lot of time to make a new road at 26. As I thought 26 was good, he played beyond my idea. But the situation kept white attacking. Black made a mistake, I am sure I could win but I could not find any victory. Finally, I played "trickly" move because of spending all time. Fortunately (for me), he did not notice my "true mean". So, I could make black double four.

Current standing therefore is 1.5 - 1.5

Short info about LatvianCh'96 - by Aldis Reims

After "summer holidays" last remaining game of Latvia Championship'96 semifinal was played on October,26. Aldis Reims had to win short-time (30min for each player) game against Arnis Veidemanis to keep a chance to protect his 10 years long hegemony in Latvian renju Championships. Situation was:

Reims    - Veidemanis   1-1 (1-0)
Balanova - Andersons    1-1 (2-0)

In first very dramatical short time game Reims lost by time in the moment he placed fifth(!) stone in a row.

In this time Veidemanis lost by time, after Reims forced him to spend a lot of time in the opening part of the game. Veidemanis(Black) spent his time out after 56th move of white in situation with a big, but not decisive yet advantage of Reims.

Reims got through to final, because of better result in Latvia Championship Final tournament (1.Reims 2.Andersons 3.Balanova 4.Veidemanis). Already first 2 games of 3rd place match was played between Veidemanis and Andersons. Result is 1:1 and again short time games must decide who will get 3rd place. For Andersons is enough to win 1 game from 2.

And in Finalmatch for Champion title will meet Reims - Balanova (!) this November.

Shoseki Honda is dead

Mr Shoseki Honda became 95 years old. The first time I met him was in December 1982 when he participated in Swedish Open International Championship of Renju (the 1st International Tournament in Renju) in Jφnkφping. In this tournament at the age of 81 he won against the 3 best Swedish players.

After that Mr Honda visited Sweden 4 more times and each time he went to Jφnkφping, my hometown and since 1988 the place for the RIF headquarter.

I also met Mr Honda in Japan and when Peter Jonsson visited Japan not so long ago he played with Mr Honda in the international celebration tournament in Kyoto.

Mr Honda was in his best shape 1920-1930 so for us it was fantastic to play with him. He really made a lot for the international relations witin the field of renju.

Mr Shoseki Honda died on 08, 09, 1996.

All renjuplayers are in mourning.

President of RIF

	At next week I'll send you the complete tables.

	Unfortunately, Chinese, Armenian and some other delegations did not

came. Only two players came from Estonia and Ukraine. So this tornament looked

like as Russian Open.

	I hope after this competition the renju countries will pay more

attention to renju development among children, and next such tournament will

be REAL World Championship.

	The Japanese delegation stayed in Nizhny Novgorod for extra two days.

They visited the Nizhny Novgorod City Administration, had talks with vice-

major, and played friendly match with Nizhny Novgorod team (9 players from

each side). The Nizhny Novgorod team won this match with score 18:9.

				Sincerely yours, A. Skuridin.
