Ando Meritee had idea to gather basketballteam of Estonia renjuplayers and start to play in Tallinn basketball amateur league. It seemed to be a bit crazy idea :), but we made it and we have already played 5 games and lost them all. Last game was 73:107, even 29 points from Johann Lents didnt help us :). Except Johann (Johancik) and Ando we have in our team Timo Ilu, Margus Tuvikene, Marek Kolk, me and some less known renjuplayers. Tunnet Taimla, Aivo Oll and Glen Liventaal have helped with being secretaries of our games, but will hopefully join our team after some years. We have also nice basketball-shirts with numbers and letters - "renju" (in estonian) in dark-blue and orange colour. We are thinking to make some more T- shirts, also for some fans, like Irene Karlsson :). Price depends on amount of wishers, its about 10-12 EUR per shirt. If someone wants to get, please let me know what size and number is wanted before December 15. Friendly, Ants

_____________________________________________________________________ Renju Newsletter No 46, 2004-10-28 Highlights - SWEDISH CHAMPIONSHIP IN FIVE-IN-A-ROW _____________________________________________________________________ SWEDISH CHAMPIONSHIP IN FIVE-IN-A-ROW 9-10 of October the Swedish Five-in-a-row championship was played in Hogsjo. Several of the players have not been seen in tournaments before, but have been playing on internet for a long time. One of these players was Kjetil Nossum from Norway. He thus became the first Norwegian to compete in an official tournament. The tournament was exiting as the lead shifted many times during the 9 rounds. Martin Carlsson, Fredrik Ternerot, Anders Bertilsson and Bjorn Lind looked as potential winners from time to time. But with a row of nice wins in the final rounds Peter Jonsson won the tournament. This was Peter's first win in a Swedish championship after about 20 years of trying. Bjorn Lind finished second one point behind Peter and Anders Bertilsson was third. In fourth place came a nice surprise as Jorgen Rehnstedt played probably his best tournament ever. Only 15 year-old Elin Dahlin played very well in the beginning of the tournament. She had some very hard encounters with the best players but was unlucky to lose some long games when time was running out. Her final placing of 23rd did not reflect the playing strength that she showed. RESULTS POINTS BUCHH. Results in final (6 players): 1. Tunnet Taimla 5 2. Timo Ilu 4 3. Johann Lents 2,5 4. Ando Meritee 2 5. Andry Purk 1 6. Aivo Oll 0,5 Ando needed to leave earlier, so first was played his last round game with Andry. Ando won, but it his last and only win in tournament. In first round Ando and Tunnet met. Ando put i8 and was able to defend, but didnt play in best way and lost. Timo beat Aivo and Johann was a bit lucky against Andry. Second round - Ando put i8 again - against Johann. Ando defended easily and had also easy win, but missed it. Tunnet beat Timo and Andry Aivo without any big problems. Third round - Ando played with Aivo, he set up D11, as usually. Ando didnt swap and Aivo played just for draw, without trying to win. And he got draw. Tunnet won Johann and Timo Andry. In fourth round Ando was totally lost his concentration and lost quickly his game with Timo (i11). Tunnet beat Andry (i11) and Johann Aivo (D6 as white). In last round Tunnet won very quickly against Aivo and Timo for 2nd place against Johann. Results in First league (only 4 players): 1. Sander Sulane 6 2.-4. Krisper Nylve, Ergo Kaljuste, Eleri Kaljuste 2 A week ago we also played QT to Estonian championship (for 2 places in final): 1. Mikk Oblikas 4 2. Rauni Lillemets 3 3. Glen Liventaal 2 4. Mart Kullamaa 1 5. Krisper Nylve 0 unfortunately Oblikas and Lillemets were not able to play in final. Estonian Cup. Semifinal between Tunnet Taimla and Ants Soosyrv was played: 1. game Taimla - Soosyrv, 1-0, i11,R. Tunnet had initiative whole game and however I had chances to get draw in the end, I made final mistake. 2. game Soosyrv-Taimla, 1-0, D11,R . I decided to swap this time to get iniative. I was very lucky to get point, because Tunnet repeated the game Kawamura - Chen Shoude from ORC tournament. 3. Soosyrv - Taimla 0-1, D3. I decided to change tactics and start was good. I had quite good attack and very good chances to get draw, but finally I made really stupid mistake... 4. Taimla -Soosyrv 0-1, D3. Tunnet also changed tactics. This game was similar with third one, but sides were changed. Tunnet attacked, but finally made very stupid mistake. 5. Soosyrv-Taimla 1-0, D3 . I made quite stupid attack, but Tunnet missed best defences in time-trouble... He could easily defend and get big advantage. So, final score was Soosyrv-Taimla 3-2 Ando Meritee and Johann Lents have played only one game Lents-Meritee 0-1, D3. Ando got quickly initiative and Johann made lot of mistakes... _____________________________________________________________________ Renju Newsletter No 32, 2004-07-23 Highlights - RESULTS OF CZECH OPEN _____________________________________________________________________ RESULTS OF CZECH OPEN, PARDUBICE 16.7-18.7.2004 Another wonderful renju trip is a history. During 16.-18.7. was played Czech Open in Pardubice. There were played two tournaments - the first one with RIF rules, 40 min per game, round robin. The second was a gomoku tournament with swap rules, 15 min per game, 7 rounds. Both competitions gathered players from five different countries - Hungary, Poland, Sweden, Czech Republic and Estonia. Renju tournament lasted for two days and had 8 participants. Gomoku tournament was played on Sunday the 18th and it had 19 participants. The whole event was a part of international festival of chess, bridge and other mind sports that started on the 15th of July and will end on the 1st of August. Stefan Karlsson was without a doubt the favourite before the tournaments. He succeeded to live up to the expectations and won both tournaments. He experienced one loss, though - in renju tournament against Ales Rybka, who achieved the second place. An article about the tournaments, all results and some pictures will be published during this week on address http://www.central.kfuk-kfum.se/renju/index.htm (the homepage of Stockholm's renjuclub). _____________________________________________________________________ Renju Newsletter No 30, 2004-07-05 Highlights - VOSU CUP AND ESTONIAN CUP QUARTERFINALS - 4TH COMPUTER WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP IN RENJU AND GOMOKU _____________________________________________________________________ VOSU CUP AND ESTONIAN CUP QUARTERFINALS As last year we had again camp in small Estonian place named Vosu. This year without Ando and Finnish players. We had RIF international rating tournament (last year only quick tournaments), but time control was shortest possible - 30 min per game. 8 players took part in main tournament and results were following (July 3.-5., Vosu, Round Robin 7 games): 1. Ants Soosyrv 6 2. Tunnet Taimla 6 3. Johann Lents 5 4. Timo Ilu 4 5. Kaia Kolk 3 6. Andry Purk 3 7. Rauni Lillemets 1 8. Sander Sulane 0 Johann and Tunnet had most interesting game. Johann had very strong attack and probably could win, but finally Tunnet won. Johann lost also against Timo, but beat easily me. I was very lucky against Andry and Tunnet, they made crazy mistakes in about equal position, where I had less time. Biggest sensation was success of Kaia. She beat Timo, Rauni and Sander! We had also competition between hostelrooms (where we lived). I lived together with Johann and Kaia and 5 other players in second room. My room was lucky to win 11- 4 :). We had also blitztournament with Tarannikovs (5 revers) rules. Results: 1. Ants 6 2. Tunnet 5 3. Timo 3 4. Andry 3 5. Rauni 2 6. Kaia 1 7. Sander 1 One night Tunnet and Andry were analysing one position and started to dispute, how to play. Finally they started to play that position and Tunnet was agree to give title of World Champion to Andry, if he win :) Finally Andry won, so You can congratulate him as new champion :))) Some days ago we finished quarterfinals of Estonian Cup. In last match Tunnet beat Andry 3-0. Other results were Ando-Rauni 3-0, Johann-Timo 3-0 and Ants-Aivo 3-1. Quite soon Tunnet and I will play semifinal. Ando and Johann will play later in this autumn. Friendly, Pavel Salnikov _____________________________________________________________________ RESULT OF SWEDISH CHAMPIONSHIP IN BLITZ, 21.02.2004 The Swedish Championship in blitz took place on the 21st of February and was held in a newdiscovered renjutown, Linkoping. The competition has traditionally been a popular event among renju players and this year was not an exception. Totally 18 players had gathered to struggle for the title, amongst which many players with a more modest tournament experience or who have been away from active playing for a while. The competition was held in two stages: 1) by drawing of lots were formed three groups. The playing system was round robin with two games with each player, 2) according to the results from the first stage was formed new groups consisting of six players. New round robin, but this time with 4 games per match. Time per game was 5 minutes. Similarly to the previous year, Stefan Karlsson became the winner of the tournament. He assured his victory already before the last round against Martin Carlsson who achieved the silver medal. At bronze was Peter Jonsson, who was very near to not to continue among the six best from the first stage. Hans Sjostedt's sixth place was a nice surprise. Many thanks to Bengt Nyberg for a well organised competition and thanks to both Bengt and Gun Nyberg for a wonderful lunch at your home! _____________________________________________________________________ Renju Newsletter No 7, 2004-02-01 Highlights - RENJUNET PORTAL _____________________________________________________________________ RENJUNET PORTAL On January 27, 2004, the RenjuNet Portal was open at the address www.renju.net This is one of the central gates that unites the world of renju, offers up-to-date information about world's renju, offers lots of links about the game servers, renju info servers, renju software, libraries, etc. I am planning to add the photo gallery there soon, too. The good thing about renjunet is that all the items have a detailed description, therefore the user can easily learn what can be expected on the linked website. Besides those links, the RenjuNet offers 4 main original services: 1) the guide for renju newcomers (rules, tutorial, puzzles) 2) the complete page about all the world championships in renju, also lots of information about european championships (it is really a huge section, and I created it nearly 5 months). the 2003 updates are not added there yet. 3) the detailed explanation about RIF - about the organisation, about members, about activities, etc. (the 2003 updates are not added there yet) 4) the communication center - long list of email contacts of world's renju players, and the guestbook where people can post messages (and later even edit or delete them if needed). Since it is all self made environment, you do not see any annoying advertisement banners there. The server hosting for RenjuNet is provided by Farmer Lu, Taiwan. All the announcements, if any, are related to renju. RenjuNet cannot become perfect by one man's effort only. Therefore, I hope you all join, and make this portal as complete as possible. If you have any articles, puzzles, links, programs (with permissions), databases (with permissions), analyses and more, then please contact me by email ando@renju.net and I will add your material to the portal. Translations are also welcome. Thanks to the great work of several Renjuclass students, all the World Championship pages were translated into Chinese and they will be published soon in RenjuNet. Welcome to RenjuNet. Feel free to express your opinion in our guestbook. Good ideas and suggestions will help the portal become better. Renju is growing much faster thanks to Internet. A good portal can help to bring new members to renju. Let us all work together in making renju game more famous in the world. Ando Meritee
