_____________________________________________________________________ Renju Newsletter No 61, 2003-12-14 Highlights - RESULTS OF OPEN SWEDISH TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP _____________________________________________________________________ RESULTS OF OPEN SWEDISH TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP Similarly to the previous years the Swedish team chamionship was played in Stockholm at Rosengatan 1. It gathered altogether eight teams and players from three countries - Sweden, Estonia and Finland. The totalt amount of participants was 25. Due to the changing of tournament system - from earlier used Italian system to round robin, the number of rounds decreased and thereby the games where played with a longer time - 55 minutes per game. The traditional time limit has been 30 minutes. A draw could be demanded after 60 own moves (119/120). Even this year the tournament was won by a foreign team. Estonia 1 with ruling world champion Tunnet Taimla, Aivo Oll and Maris Tuvikene were convincing champions with leaving the silver medalists and Swedish team champions - Hannes Hermansson, Linus Hermansson and Marcus Eriksson behind at 14,5. That was 2,5 points less than that of the winners. At bronze we had an another foreign team - Tampere with Samuli Saarenpää, Marko Pellikka and Lauri Toivonen. _____________________________________________________________________ Renju Newsletter No 59, 2003-12-05 Highlights - INVITATION TO COMPUTER GOMOKU TOURNAMENT _____________________________________________________________________ INVITATION TO COMPUTER GOMOKU TOURNAMENT I want you invite to take part in 5th go-mocu computer tournament gomocup 2004. Every year since 2000 the go-mocu computer tournament takes place in Czech republic. There were only Czech speaking partitipants till now and because of increasing quality and quantity of computer brains I decided to try extending the tournament engagement for people of English speaking countries and the another countries as well. I have written you to found out if you are interesting in this tournament. So far all information are present unfortunatly only in Czech language. If I found out that you are interesting in this matter, I would translate all necessary information into English to be present in time. For the time being I give you only the basic information: The tournament is free, there are is no entry fee. The brains are executable files (*.exe console application) communicating via text files. The tournament program executes the brain, the brain reads the text file with the position and in the time limit saves the best move in the text file. The tournament program reads the text files asw. I expected the tournament will take part in spring 2004. If you want to join in, contact me please at email adress tomas_kubes@seznam.cz I will be glad if you forwards this message to the potencial applicants. Yours Sincerely Tomáš Kubeš tomas_kubes@seznam.cz

You can also decide in which way to sort, if you want to see the result ascending or descending, how many scores you want to see or which places you want to see. You can find the All time word table/list (Maratontabellen) on the following page withing the Jonkoping club site: http://www.lemes.se/kfumjkpg/maraton/maratonsm.htm If you are interested to use my method for your country I could give you my php-files and a mysql-file with structure. You must have a web site with php and mysql. RIF Web site has php and mysql and in the future maybe I will change the address above to an address within RIF. If you want to contact me via email, please, se to it that the word RENJU is on the subject line. Because of my long activities within Internet unfortunately I receive about 70 letters everyday and about 69 is of no use for me so I have to just check very quickly (without opening any letter) if some letter includes something interesting. Friendly, Ants _____________________________________________________________________ RESULTS OF UPSALA RENJU OPEN 27th of september 2003 the Upsala Renju Open was held for the first time in a few years. Among the 12 competitors were three of the swedish participants from this summers World Championchip as well as some other routined and also some less experienced players. Our old star Ingvar Sundling made comeback and played his first tournament in several years. Both Stefan Karlsson and Petter Gardstrom where undefeated in their respective groups before the final round. Petter won against Stefan in the final and had thus not lost a single game in the turnament. Martin Carlsson won the final competing for the third place against Tord Andersson. Remarkable is that a new player discovered by the Uppsala Club, Michel Harms - a german exchange student, who had just learned about renju played well and had an interesting, long game against Irene Karlsson. Unfortunately and probably because of stress of the clock ticking he missed his winning moves and lost the game. Renju Uppsala wishes to thank Petter Gardstrom for arranging with hosting of the tournament and food for the players, and Aeterna Service AB for sponsoring part of the tournament. //Martin Larsson, Tord Andersson.

We hope lots of people will visit us and enjoy our free service, and we trust you and rely on your loyalty about the copyright. If you have any suggestions or questions, please contact us. Tournament has begun: ---------------------------------- The Online Renju Class annual tournament has begun. There are two tournaments played at the same time - the Finals of the 4th ORC Tournament and the Qualification of the 5th ORC Tournament. Both tournaments are played in round robin system, and there are 20 and 25 players respectively. All the current and ended games and tournament tables can be viewed online. http://ns02.compute.com.tw/~renjuclass/tournament/tournindex.html ORC Game Server becoming very popular: ----------------------------------------------------- The ORC Game Server is getting more and more popular. It is a public service, where all the renju players of the world can play renju and have fun. The environment is English based, and its very easy to learn the use of the software. You can play the games with both RIF and Sakata rule (the rule from Karepa Open 2003). There is a working rating list and kyu/dan system. The server is full of people 24 hours a day. In rush hours there may be over 40-50 renju players in the room. We believe the number will keep growing. We can meet best players of Russia, Estonia, Finland, China, Taiwan, etc. For example, Taimla, Klimashin, Chingin, Meritee and several other World Championship players. You can download the software from here, and log in and start games instantly. http://ns02.compute.com.tw/~renjuclass/departments/theory/nnrs/help. html If you want to take a look at live rating list, you can click here: http://ns02.compute.com.tw/~lu/ratings.html All the games are stored in the server and you can study from them. Of course, it is good to keep in mind that many of the games were played in 2-5 minute time control, so you will not feel surprised finding that strong players lost many games. :) The use of ORC Game Server is free! You do not have any responsibilities. The player is expected to be kind and friendly, that is all. All the suggestions about how to improve services are welcome! We are thankful to Lu Wenzhe who designed and programmed this system. ORC Forum: ------------------ Online Renju Class Forum is located at http://ns02.compute.com.tw/~renjuclass/cgi-bin/forum/leoboard.cgi It is a public Forum where everybody can join, even when you are not a Renjuclass member. There are nearly 400 members in the Forum from all over the world. The General Messages board is always fine for posting messages if you are not sure of how to use other boards there. We are glad that some members of Forum - Soosyrv and Kawamura - are regularly publishing the news there. The Forum has built-in renju diagram system, so you can publish renju games, analyses, problems there, and read others' diagrams. The use and joining of Forum is all free! At this moment there are over 3300 postings and replies in our Forum. It is such a great collection! If you are first time visitor, you may enjoy this huge amount of renju information for weeks! :) -------------------------- If you have any questions about Online Renju Class or about its related services (Game Server and Forum) then you can send email to ando@renju.net or publish your questions in Forum where the other members will reply to you happily. _____________________________________________________________________ Renju Newsletter No 39, 2003-08-12 Highlights - THE 8TH WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP IS OVER - MOM FOR THE RIF GENERAL ASSEMBLY _____________________________________________________________________ Dear Renju friends. The 8th World Championship is over. I would like to thank all people (in Sweden and in other countries) who made this championship possible. Due to problems with findning sponsors we had to make the event with a small budget. But on the other hand we are quite satisfied with the organization. All important things worked out rather good. Congratulations to the World Champions Yuliya Savrasova and Tunnet Taimla and also to their trainers Irina Metreveli and Ants Soosorv. During these days was the RIF General Assembly, a meeting in good spirit with a lot of optimism and interesting things for the future. Some important decisions: In the Central Committee from now on is an extra member, Anders Henningsson. He has the title as Vice President and he will work with cooperation between Asia and Europe. The decision on point 14 is very important. It is about how RIF should deal with a future change of the opening rules. This work will be carried out by the Rules Commission. If you have opinons in this question, please contact the Rules Commission. I am very pleased with the decision on point 15. From now on the work of the commissions will be more effective. The book "Five-In-A-Row/Renju" will be printed in 500 copies. We hope to do this within six months. On Dec 1, May 16 and Aug 1 will be announcements in Renju Newsletter about what tournaments that will be counted on the official RIF rating list, together with information how to take part in those tournaments. The exception will be this year. Aug 1 is changed to Sep 1. RIF will re-establish a list of connection men in countries without Renju federations. Are you interested in being the connection man for your country, please contact me petejonsson@hotmail.com Locations for future Championships: 2004 Team World Championship : Tyumen, Russia European Championship : Poduga, Russia Youth World Championship : Armenia 2005 9th World Championship : Tallinn, Estonia Peter Jonsson President of RIF The 8th World Championship in Renju http://www.renju.nu/wc2003/ _____________________________________________________________________ MOM FOR THE RIF GENERAL ASSEMBLY, Aug 5, 2003 in Vadstena, Sweden See http://www.renju.nu/wc2003/MOM_RIF_030805.htm

About history of 4-in-a-row on 4xn board. Lustenberger in 1967 showed that first player win for n sufficiently large. Selfridge showed that n=28 enough. You can also analyse a little during the game (use 'sim' button). You can save the game in Renlib format. See the Renju Board screenshot for more information. For the moment the plugin works only for Miranda IM. Plug-in is free-of-charge. Good luck in game! Duke.

Opening of the General Assembly. 2. Election of the Chairman of the General Assembly. 3. Election of the secretary of the General Assembly. 4. Election of three persons who should check the minutes. 5. Election of three scrutineers. 6. Approval of the agenda. 7. Roll call. 8. Adoption of new RIF members, if any. New members do have the right to vote on the General Assembly. 9. Annual report from the President, the Treasurer and the Auditor. 10. Approval of the work of the Central Committee for the last two years. 11. Budget and the membership fee. 12. Election of the Central Committee. The Estonian federation suggests Anders Henningsson to be a candidate for Vice President. 13. Proposal from the General Secretary: RIF should use a system with coefficients for the member fees depending on the economical situation in the country concerned. If the General Assembly approves the proposal the Central Committee should make a suggestion for coefficients that can be approved on the General Assembly 2005. At the Mind Sports Olympiad such system was used for the tournament fees. 14. Proposal from Yuriy Tarannikov (through the President): We will have one "perspective future opening rules" (PFOR) and five "candidate future opening rules" (CFOR). During the period between two General Assemblies these rules and new prepositions are analyzed by federations and an Opening Rules Commission. At each General Assembly the following three questions are decided: a) Will the current PFOR become the new RIF rules? If not b) Which rules will be the new PFOR (the choice is possible only between the current PFOR and the five current CFOR; also it is possible that the status of PFOR will be vacant). c) Which maximum five number of rules will be the new CFOR:s (the choice is possible between all prepositions. For example, if we introduce this system at the GA 2003 then we will be able to decide five CFOR at the GA 2005, one PFOR at the GA 2007 and to establish the new rules at the GA 2009. So, we will have enough time to analyze all consequences and renju players do not have to be afraid of that the rules will be changed suddenly. 15. Proposal from the President: The commissions are given a specific task (from the GA or the Central Committee) and a specific date when it should be ready together with the report. During all RIF history the work of the commissions have with a few exceptions been very poor. Maybe it can be easier for the commissions to work in this way. 16. Proposal from the President: RIF should be registered as an official organization. It has been a wish from some people that it would be much easier for them to cooperate with authorities in their countries if RIF was an official organization. RIF can apply for registration in Sweden. This will lead to that RIF will have a REGISTRATION NUMBER. It is no cost for the registration in Sweden but the authorities need a copy of the statues and copies of the General Assembly minutes. The form for registration will be brought to the GA in Vadstena. 17. Proposal from the President: RIF should have an official Swiss system to be used in all RIF championships. The Referee Commission makes a suggestion and the Central Committee decides. In Chess FIDE has an official system. For us it should be easier for referees and players. 18. Proposal from the President: RIF should reprint the book "Five-In- A-Row/Renju". In the same time the book should be updated with new information in the end of the book (pages 152 – 154). The cost for 500 copies in the same quality as the original book is about 20 000 SEK. I think it is necessary not only to have information available on internet but also in book form. 19. Proposal from the President: The Sport Committee should a month before a new rating period starts declare what tournaments during this period that should be counted on the RIF official rating list. The declaration should be announced in the Renju Newsletter. Moreover, the first rating period of a year should be from Jan 1 – May 15. As the situation is now I am not sure that all players really know what tournaments that are counted. Quite often it happens that a tournament starts in the end of April and finishes in May. 20. Proposal from the President: RIF should re-establish a list of connection men and publish this list on RIF home page. The President should at minimum once every sixth month ask the connection men about the situation of Renju in the country concerned and also ask if he/she wants to continue as a connection man. The President should also see that RIF systematically check out all sites for renju/five in a row in order to establish more contacts. The President can ask suitable persons to carry out this task and he should also together with the Central Committee take care of that a "package" of information can be delivered (by ordinary mail or by e-mail) to people who have showed interest for Renju. The President can during the next two years use maximum 4000 SEK for this task. 21. Decision of the place for future RIF official championships. a) Tyumen in Russia has asked for being the host for the Team World Championship in 2004. b) Tallinn in Estonia has asked for being the host for the World Championship in 2005. c) Asian Championship d) Youth World Championship e) European Championship 22. Reports from the commissions 23. Elections for delegates in all RIF commissions. The former delegates can be found on General Assembly decisions 2001, part2, see http://www.renju.nu/agendaga2001/ga_part2.PDF 24. Timo Ilu 8 6. Rauni Lillemets 5 7. Mikk Oblikas 5 8. Peeter Kolk 3 9. Kaia Kolk 0 We played double-Round Robin. Order of rounds we took by lot, but so fairly, that 2 best players Ando and Tunnet met in the last round. But before last round Ando lost 1 game against Timo. So, Ando had 1 point less and started very sharply against Tunnet - with I12 . But Tunnet couldnt win as black and finally made mistake and lost. Ando could play more carefullyin next game, but he continued with risky playng - Tunnet put D 11 and Ando continued as white and left to I 10. Finally they got position, where Tunnet had little initiative, but less time. Now Ando made mistake and Tunnet won. Only luck give me 3rd place, because Johann didnt close 4 against me and Timo missed very easy win. Last year winner Timo made many mistakes - he could quite easily win one game against Tunnet too. The history of Tyumen begins with 1586. It is the first Russian city to the East of Ural. Tyumen is rife with historical monuments; especially it is well known with a wooden groove of Russian masters in an old part of the city. Tyumen is the "Capital of Petroleum". There are a lot of banks in the city. Some of them take leading positions in Russia. The city promptly grows and becomes handsomer. Nowadays Tymen takes the third place in Russia in rates of housing. Also an intensive reconstruction of roads is made and by 2004 it will be basically completed. There are many cultural institutions: museums, theatres, and a casino. The cultural business center also works. The quantity of players constantly participating in competitions exceeds 30. In the city there are two five-stars hotels: "Quality-hotel" and "Prometheus". The tournament hall will be situated in the "Quality- hotel". Both hotels are located in a historical center of the city. More detailed information about hotels in the city and prices will be described in the next Information Letter. There is an international airport "Roschino". Direct flights to Peking, Paris, Germany and London are at your service. It will be convenient to reach here for majority of foreign participants. Unfortunately, some other players living in the region could not take part this time. The well known Gothenburg player Jan Palmgren is now on East Timor, working for the UN.
